Mathematics
What is Mathematics?
Montessori mathematics introduces children to numbers and operations through hands-on, meaningful experiences. Children build understanding by working with materials that make abstract concepts visible and clear.
Why do we practice it?
This approach helps children truly understand math rather than memorize it. By moving from hands-on learning to abstract thinking, children gain confidence and a strong foundation for future problem-solving.
What materials do we use?
Children work with carefully designed materials such as number rods, spindle boxes, sandpaper numbers, and golden beads. Each material isolates a specific concept and allows children to learn through repetition and discovery.
Numbers & Quantity
Children begin by learning to connect numbers with their quantities. Through counting, sorting, and organizing materials, they develop a clear understanding of what numbers truly represent.
Operations
Using concrete materials, children explore the four basic operations in a hands-on way. This allows them to physically see and understand how numbers combine, separate, and relate to one another.
Concrete to Abstract
As children gain confidence with materials, they naturally transition to solving problems mentally and on paper. This gradual shift ensures a deep, lasting understanding of mathematical concepts.
